Last month, I spoke about not letting fear run your life. The feedback I received was that it resonated with people in a deep way. I wanted to continue this conversation around how fear holds us back because it keeps showing up in my life and the lives of my clients.
Fear can be very pervasive and often drives our actions and experiences. One way it does that, which we may not really notice, is that it convinces us that we need to be or feel safe. That translates to doing things the way we have always done them because we know the response or result we will receive. Even if it’s not exactly what we want, it’s comfortable.
To follow your own path and to be able to create what you want in the world, may require you to do things differently. While playing it safe is comfortable and easy, it often leaves us with a sense of dissatisfaction or a feeling that something is missing in our lives. I have a belief that the things we regret in our lives are not the things we have done, but the things we didn’t do because we were scared.
Here are some ‘not-so-scary’ ways of expanding your comfort zone…
- Start with something small that feels ‘do-able’ to you. It could be taking a different route to work, writing a blog post and hitting ‘Publish’ before you have time to overanalyze it, or making a phone call to someone you have wanted to connect with for a while.
- Do something creative to tap into different parts of your brain. Listen to music, paint, dance or anything else that feels creative to you. You will start to open new neural pathways that will open you to new ideas and possibilities. Make sure to do something with these insights – write them in a journal, or even better, take action on them.
- Deliberately stretch or expand your comfort zone. To gain greater flexibility in your body requires a continuous choice to stretch and strengthen every day. The same is true of growing our ability to take scary actions! Pick an area of your life where you feel stuck but know that there is more out there for you. It might be relationships, business success or it could be wanting to shift something in your career. There are always many actions we can take, but there are a few that can really bring us the results we want. For example, safe actions to build your business could be answering emails, creating business cards or writing a blog post just like this one! An action that will produce results, however, and is likely a bit more uncomfortable, would be to call a potential client and offer your services. That is the action that will move you forward and even though you may feel scared to do it, by taking the action, you have now expanded your comfort zone!
- Do more of Step #3!!
You are the co-creator of your life which means that you always have the choice and ability to bring what you want into your life. Be compassionate with yourself and also be pro-active. If you need support to take these scary actions, ask for it!
There are profound gifts waiting for you on the other side!
